The next day, Rissterus arrived at the tavern. The sun still hadn't come up and probably wouldn't for at least for another hour. The morning was cold and threatened snow. Rissterus stood by the door and looked out into the darkness, hoping for Oswin to show up soon. He gathered his cloak around him and waited. The air was starting to freeze his hands so he lifted them up to his face and breathed on them, rubbing them together. Where was the guildmaster?

Elyiravëra had just awoken and was preparing a fire in the tavern. She placed two logs in, side by side and placed a third one across them. Sparks fell on them as the used the flint to try to light it. She tried again and again until finally one of the smaller twigs caught fire. It spread around to the other nearby twigs and finally the logs lit. She held her hands over the growing flames, warming them. Then she turned and went to get her breakfast, before the tavern patrons arrived.

Rissterus was still outside, waiting for Oswin. The sun was just coming up, casting an orange glow on the eastern horizon. He looked down the road once more. The priest still hadn't appeared. Either he's changed his mind, or he's just taking his own time, Rissterus thought bitterly. If it was the first, Rissterus would be furious with him, and if it was the second, Rissterus would be heavily annoyed with the Archbishop. I will give him half an hour, then I will be on my way - with or without him.
Rissterus turned and headed for the tavern door. No sense in waiting in the cold for someone who might not show. He pulled the tavern door open and walked into the half-lit room. There was a female elf sitting at the table closest to the fire eating. Rissterus nodded a greeting to her as he went to the fire to warm himself. The fire was having difficulties in staying alive, so Rissterus helped it along. He knelt down by it and whispered magic words. The fire grew in size and picked up intensity. Rissterus held his hands out to warm them on the new blaze.

When Rissterus entered, Elyira looked over at him and smiled. She didn't feel like eating with company, but she smiled anyway. He walked towards the fire which was just to her left. She watched him for a minute as he set down his staff on the ground and hold his hands over the fire. She looked back down at her food and took another bite. She suddenly felt a blast of heat from the fire and looked over. It was tripple the size it was before! She half stood up, worried it might've caught onto something. The young man who had come in was still holding his hands over the fire as if nothing had happened.
"What did you do?" Elyira asked, astounded. It must've been him.

Rissterus looked over at the elf. "I... increased the fire," he said. He turned back to the fire, keeping the smile from his face. He always enjoyed suprising people with his magic. Something about their expressions pleased him. A mix between fear, wonder, and respect. Yes, he liked it very much.

She didn't look away from him, not satisfied. "What did you do? The fire is now roaring. It was just a little flame a moment ago. How did you do it??" Elyiravëra now noticed his black robes, and his staff with the blue jem at the top. He could be a magic user, Elyira realized suddenly. "Was it magic?"

Rissterus looked over at the elf. "Yes, it was magic." He pulled himself up with his staff and looked at Elyiravëra. "I am Rissterus the Scholar, Guildsman of the the Sorcerers," Rissterus paused for effect, then added, "and you are?"

Elyiravëra also stood. "I am Elyira," she said. She didn't use her Elven name. Only Elves used it. And Rissterus was obvously a human. She looked at Rissterus curiously. A Sorcerer... I know several tales of Sorcerer's - none of them good. Her eyes looked at his staff as she spoke again. "What do you do so early in the morning? Sun has not yet risen.."

Rissterus pulled a chair out and motioned for Elyira to do the same. He didn't mind the company while he waited for Oswin. Chances were the priest wouldn't show anyways. But he would wait for him anyway, and so the company during his wait was welcome. "I am waiting for someone. We are to journey together."

Elyira sat opposite him. "And you wish to have an early start," she said more like a statement than a question. She took a bite of bread. "Have you eaten? I can get something for you." Elyiravëra found any fear she had felt before leave her. Rissterus seemed to be nice enough, and even if he wasn't, he was a sorcerer. She had only heard of them in tales or gossip, but here was a real sorcerer!

"I have, thank you," Rissterus said. He had eaten a small breakfast when he had woken up. "You work here, then?" he asked. He looked over at the roaring fire. Though it was quickly warming the room, he was still cold. He looked at the elf. "Actually, I will have a glass of your finest ale."
That would warm him up.

Elyiravëra looked at him as she stood. "Not exactly. I mean, it's unofficial." She went behind the counter and poured the ale into a glass. "I'm a storyteller. A bard." She set the glass down in front of Rissterus. "That'll be five coins," she said with a smile. She sat down opposite him again. "So, who is this person you are waiting for? And where will you go with him? - Or her," she added.

A bard? Hmmm... Rissterus withdrew the said amount of coins and placed them on the table. He took a drink of the ale and set the mug down. "He," Rissterus said in reply to her last words. "He is a priest. We will be traveling together for awhile." And that was all he intended to tell her, at least at the moment. "So, you're a bard? Do you know much history of Mirawold, then?" Perhaps she would know about the Sanctuary of the Broken. If she did, he might just invite her along on their journey.

"A priest?" That's odd. A priest and a sorcerer. You wouldn't think they'd travel together. She had finished her breakfast by now and cleared her plate. He's changing the subject. "Not as much as I'd like to. Why?"

Rissterus finished the ale and looked thoughtfully at Elyiravera. "...Because that is our destination. Our journey together seems strange to you," Rissterus stated, seeing it on her face. "Well, that may be so. But the whole reason for it is ... complicated, at best. It has to do with the history. You say you don't know as much as you'd like. That implies you do know something, though. Even having someone who knows but a little about it would help us. So I ask you: will you join us on our journey?"
I may as well put all my cards on the table, Rissterus thought. Either she's in, or she's out. I hope for her sake she's in. Rissterus had no intention of letting rumor of their journey spread throughout the land. And that went for Oswin too. He better show, and he better not have told everyone about it either.
