Saren realised that the Sorcerer's Guild was not at it's strongest for quite a few years now. It was vulnerable from attack. The Mages didn't exactly like the Sorcerers but they wouldn't risk open war, no matter how weakened the Sorcerer's guild seemed to be. No, the Guild was much more vulnerable to attack from the so called "Uncivilized" races like the Goblins and Orcs. Saren needed allies he could confide in to help him.
The Mages were out of the question and, the Thieves care only about their own personal gain. Bards seemed a useless ally, Saren believed that songs were useless against the Orc hordes. The Warriors were too concerned with the defense of Minas Rithes, and the Rangers were tree huggers who watched out for Nature alone. The only suitable allies to Saren would be the stealthy Assassins of Mirawold. They could see eye to eye on certain issues, they provided the necessary like-minded brawn to reinforce the Sorcerer's powerful brain.
Saren had one of his Acolytes spread rumours that Saren wished to meet with the Guild Master of the Assassins. It was a long shot for him, but it seemed to pay off as the Acolyte soon reported back to Saren explaining that there would be a meeting arranged on grounds that belonged to neither, Saren's acolyte explained the meeting would be in a small side room in the Minas Rithas sewers. Somewhere where the privacy could be maintained.
At a small table and two chairs, and flanked by two Sorcerer acolytes, Saren awaited his Assassin counterpart patiently, elbows resting on the table, hands clasped together with his chin resting on them.m

The Hawk appeared at the door. He'd come alone and expected the Sorcerer to have done the same. He'd killed sorcerers before and this one would be no different if he tried anything. Altaiir was a powerful figure and was it was very unwise to cross him.
The cowl of his hood brought the darkness of the room over his eyes. He said nothing, waiting for the Sorcerer to speak.

Saren watched in curiosity as the White-robed man entered the room. He looked rather strange for an Assassin, Saren had always assumed that the Assassins would wear black robes as to conceal their location from enemies. He would not question the man however, after all the Guild Master knew more about Assassins than he did.
"Please, take a seat."
A small polite smile eminated from Saren's lips, it wasn't exactly a sincere smile, it was more of an obligation.
"I assume the Acolyte representing our guild filled you in on why we asked you to come to this meeting?"

Altaiir sat across from him, bu kept his back from the door. Carelessness got people killed. "No. He left in quite a hurry. I suppose he found us more intimidating than he thought he would. I expect you have something of importance to discuss with me. I'm a very busy man."

"Yes, of course, I understand, the Sorcerers are also quite busy.
Saren sat back in his chair, his elbows remained on the table. Bringing his head back revealed his face in the flickering torch light of the makeshift meeting room to the Assassin for a short time. Saren gestured one of his arms in the air to the two Sorcerers on his flank.
Bowing their heads to both Saren and the Assassin Guild Master as a gesture of respect, before they walked off into one of the doors in the back.
"Now we have privacy to discuss the matter at hand."
Saren pulled back his red robe hood to reveal his head, before standing to his feet.
"My name is Saren Asentirus. As you already know I am the Master of the Guild of Sorcerers, and I have asked you to come here to discuss a mutallly beneficial agreement with each other, so that our two guilds may work well together in an equilibrium."
"Our two guilds are very alike, all other guilds appear obsessed with certain values, the Bards care for nothing than their tunes with closed minds. The Rangers reduce their intelligence to studying the "magic" of nature. Warriorsare too obsessed with their own defense. The Mages are bound by morals, and the Theives would sell their families for a single gold coin."
"My friend, we are the only two guilds whos intelligence are not bound to a worthless pursuit like Nature. We are the few where our strength lies in something other than brute force."
"Surely you must see the naivity of these other guilds and realise that the two strongest guild should collaberate openly with the other for a true mutal benefit."
Saren brought himself forward again resting his chin on his hands, waiting for the response of the hooded figure.

He'd expected the Sorcerer to come alone. The terms weren't neutral afterall.
"Our two guilds are very alike."
"How are our Guilds alike? And what is it that you wish to gain by making an ally of my guild? I assure you we have no need for an ally. We're quite self-sufficient, so what can I gain by joining ranks with a Sorcerer?"

Saren nodded his head at the words of the Assassin, his questions were sensible.
"We Sorcerers have a certain reputation for... brutality."
"Imagine if you will that the Warriors discovered the location of your Guild Hall, I understand this is unlikely as the Assassins are incredibly skillful at hiding, even large fortresses, but still nothing is invisible. I also know that the Assassins are incredibly skilled combatants worth at least a 100 guardsmen, yet the brute force of the Warriors would prove overwhelming."
"Now if you were allied with us the Warriors would never dare risk open war with the two most powerful guilds alone. And with our reputation, knowing that the Assassin's were allied with us would cause many combatants to reconsider, not only attacking you, and the esteemed people of the Assassins, but also it would spare the lives of many Sorcerers, who would live to aid you in conflict."
"With this alliance as a deterrent many lives would be spared and conflicts that would have been, would never come to pass. The Assassin's strive for "peace in all things" do they not? With an alliance there would be no conflicts for your people. There would be peace."
"I would not usually speak like this but we are in need of the strong, swift arm of the Assassin. Our towers are coming close to being attacked by Goblin tribes in the Desert. We would ask no more of you than you would of us. A mutual relationship in all aspects."

He thought for several moments in silence. "The warrior guild is again without leadership. With my guild keeping it in this weak state I see no threat from the Warriors of Lebonwaith. Even now, their leaders are being executed. I can not see an alliance with the Sorcerer guild bringing any peace... to anyone. That includes my assassins."
He was silent again.
"But the threat of the goblin hordes from the south affects us all. Though it has yet to conflict our lives, I am sure that it could. You are aware that the Goblins, until just recently, were being led by a Sorcerer. The warriors destroyed him and disbanded them for a time. What makes you believe you can be trusted?"

Saren looked away from the Assassin for a few moment before raising himself to his feet. He began to pace up and down the room.
"I can understand your concerns with creating an alliance with the Sorcerers, we have a reputation for betrayal, for example the Sorcerer leading the Goblin hordes."
"This Sorcerer was an outcast, he was outcasted for harbouring thoughts against his guild, he sought to thieve our knowledge from under our noses. He came back with the Goblins as a way of venting his anger and power."
"We would have no use in betraying you. You hold no secrets that the Sorcerers seek, and many of our Apprentices and Acolytes fear the Assassins, risking open betrayal with you would cause half our ranks to turn on us, and you to send men after me, not something I would be easy with."
"As for the Goblins, if we work collectively we can repel this invasion together, saving the lives of both mine and your men. Independantly, we would take much more losses."
He returned his gaze to the Assassin, awaiting an answer.m

"We will sign a pact with you, but there will be no open alliance between us."
He stood up, expecting the metting to be over.
"You turn on us, and I'll kill you myself. Don't let this be a mistake. Youre trying to befriend a Guild that is much more powerful than your own. Don't think treachery will gain you anything."

Saren nodded his head. He didn't fear the Assassin, but he knew he was serious.
"Of course, but be aware that underestimating the Guild of Sorcerers is a mistake a lot have people have made. By agreeing to this, my friend, you have saved the lives of many in your guild."
"So we have an accord?"
Saren offered his hand for shaking as a symbol of the signing of a contract. It would be as good as a signiture to him.m

"Was that a threat, Sorcerer? Or did you mean, we saved the lives of many in our guilds?" His fingers were loose over the trigger of his killing blade. He would end it right here if he felt threatened again. Choose your words carefully.

Saren shook his head.
"It was not a threat, no, as I have stated before, we would have nothing to gain, only something to lose."
"See this is why I believe an alliance is perfect, we have nothing to gain off war with the other. We have no use for the secrets of the Assassins, we do not need sword mastery techniques, just as you have no need of Sorcerer secrets, I would imagine many of you would not want to know how to wield the Dark Arts..."
"And yet together we can make a difference. If the Assassins ever run into trouble, we shall be there for you. We only ask that you do the same."
He could sense the Assassin getting anxious, he must believe that Saren was going to try something. Despite his past, during this meeting he had only the best of intentions.
His hand was still outstretched waiting for the Assassin's approval of the agreement.

That will suffice for now, Sorcerer. Your actions need follow your words else this agreement become open warfare. A war that will destroy your guild in its entirety. He nodded, having not come to strike fear into a hopeful and close to being desperate ally.
He wouldn't trust the Sorcerer or his guild were he within an inch of his life. He had to be in the best interest of his guild. They needed no ally, but the offer from such an infamous guild had him interested. He wanted to see what happened. And he hoped they would turn on him.
"This agreement will remain a secret. My guild does not need to be seen as a project of any darker cause. It wouldn't pain me at all to break our pact." He stood a moment longer then turned, leaving the room as well as the outstretched hand. He would not shake the hand of a Sorcerer. But the deal was set nonetheless.
He disappeared as he walked through the damp tunnels.

Saren brought his hand back to his side as the Assassin let it hang in mid air.
He smiled to the Assassin as he walked off disappearing from the dim light of the sewer. A secret the pact would remain.
The sorcerer sat back down his his chair and brought a hand to his beard stroking it lightly.
"And so the wheel begins to turn at last."
A wicked smile rose on Saren's pale white face.
